TMT used to enjoy a new Wolphin (McSweeney's 'DVD magazine" not a whale/dolphin hybrid) every couple of months, but being lazy and cheap, we never renewed. Instead I'll occasionally check out their YouTube channel where I'll run across previews like this one for the new issue. It features another TMT favorite, James Franco and is the kind of thing that makes wish we still got Wolphin. But not enough for me to actually resubscribe.

What Do the Dogs Know?

Just now, what seemed like 10 dogs all loudly voiced their concerns in unison. Some barked, some whined, and some hound dog howled.

Maybe they're just singing, but maybe not. It's like how horses know an earthquake is coming. If, in a few moments, Montana earth opens up and sucks me in, those dogs called it.

Readability - like drinkability but not for complete idiots

I've been meaning to post about this for a while. As a designer sometimes I'll find myself so frustrated by the messy ad covered layout of a website that I won't read an article. I found a fairly simply solution to this problem, Readability. Readability takes the body of the article you want to read and presents it to you in a simple format without all the b.s. around it. All you have to do is click your Readability bookmark when you find yourself on one of those sloppy pages.

Here's an example, you can turn this:Into this:

I may have been lazy in using the NYTimes as my example, being that they are cleaner than a lot of other news websites but you should get the idea. You can customize the look of the cleaned up version (font and size, margin width, etc.) before you create your bookmark and boom you are ready to roll. Check it out here.

Sometimes while I'm playing with Sammy, the wonderful pup mentioned in the previous post and pictured above, I'll start talking to him. It's always just my way of praising him when he is doing something good but sometimes it can get weird. It usually begins with things like, You are such a good boy. Then it becomes, You love to play with (this or that toy). Sometimes I start to get on a roll and say different combination or other variations. Today I found myself saying I'm going to play you up and, probably the best one of the day, You're such a little playboy.

I'd like to talk about TLC's "I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant," which began as a documentary, but has, from what I gather, turned into an entire series about women who found out they were pregnant when they were giving birth.

I Didn't Know that there were so many of these cases. But the program goes to show that a diverse group of women (professionals, rockers, sluts) fall victim to

surprise babies, and it does so utilizing reenactment.

Last night, one story, reenacted:

After months of stomach distress which she chalked up to some kind of horrible gas, a woman was sitting on the toilet. Her husband, who was in the bathroom with her (!) as she pushed out what she thought was a massive BM, knew something wasn't right.

"Baby, are you all right?"

"I have to push."

Needless to say, it was not a poop.

Tesla Rolls Out 'WhiteStar' aka Model S aka My New Crush

That's right, I said 'my new crush'. For this car, I've turned into a 12 year old girl. Their business model at Tesla Motors was basically to start by making a high end all electric sports car, the Roadster. The profits from that would help finance the development of a 'mid-range' car priced around $50k. The profit from that would fund a $30k model. And so they would have a small fleet of electric plug-ins for a fairly wide range of customers.

The second car, code-named WhiteStar, was finally unveiled yesterday as Tesla's Model S. I have to say it's quite attractive and now is in a price range that many more people can afford. That's not to say everyone can afford it, it's just far more affordable than the Roadster.

Some Specs from Tesla:

Okay, now that I've listed the specs, I'm kind of over the initial pure sex appeal, but still smitten. I'm definitely interested to see how well this car does. Frankly, everyone (including John McCain) is shitting their pants over the Chevy Volt and the WhiteStar seems a far nicer (and moderately more expensive) electric plug-in with a big brother who has done the hard work of proving the technology. We'll see if the two vehicles end up competitive.

Mini profiles that utilize recordings from each subject, and b&w photographs of their metropolitan lives, this N.Y./Region feature is stunning. The first one I found was "Marc Tremitiere: The Baby Deliverer" and it blew my socks off.

Stewart and Takei on Galaxy Quest

As a person, my defining characteristic might be this: I love the '99 sci-fi spoof, Galaxy Quest. If you've wondered why I haven't posted in a while, it's because GQ has been on TBS.

Galaxy Quest is a Star Trek takeoff. It's about a sci-fi television series that, despite a die hard fan base, was eventually canceled, leaving the stars to drink, bitterly costumed, at conventions for the next 2o years. But then, when they'd just about given up hope of successful acting careers, real aliens arrive, whisk the six has-beens to what they think is an acting gig, only its not. It's real space bananas!

More Synopsis

The aliens had intercepted old episodes of the show, mistook them for "historical documents" and fashioned their ship and social order on the absurdity they'd seen. Now, under very real threat of the villainous Sarris, they need "Commander Peter Quincy Taggart" and crew to save the day.

"With no script, no director, and no clue about real interstellar travel, the make-believe crew of the Protector has to turn in the performances of their lives to become the heroes the aliens believe them to be." (from Rotten Tomatoes, which gave GQ a 90% btw!)

Well i just love it. And when I came across responses from two Star Trek alums,
Patrick Steward and George Takei, I about flipped my nerd lid.

See, the two things that I really enjoy in GQ are

1) the cast (Allen, Rickman, Weaver, Shaloub, Mitchell, Rockwell...all actors I would put in my hypothetical movie)

2) the way the movie mocks Trek's absurd logic.

So Kirk, did it bite?

TMT March Madness

TooMuchTeeth is setting up a bracket via NYTimes for the Men's NCAA basketball tournament and we want you to join. To be honest, we really don't know much about college basketball, but that's kind of the fun part. In our experience, the person who knows the least about the sport often wins the bracket. There are always unpredictable upsets, and not so surprising wins. Trying to actually figure this out is futile. You know I like football. Well, now I've turned my burly, mannish attention to Basketball and I thought I'd give you a rundown of my teams.

But first, a caveat: Someone once said AP and I look alike. I was disturbed to hear that, according to this person, my husband and I were the gender opposites of each other. I don't agree, but if you do, if you've always thought AP and I are bizarrely twinned, that our genitals are the only things that set us apart, and you've not seen our genitals, so to you we are unilook, and then there's our likes and dislikes which are pretty much the same, well this should be of consolation. This is what sets my husband and I apart. AP can only like one sports team. Every other team: his team's competition and so he hates them. It's like with football. We're for the Giants. So when I say I like Donovan McNabb and AP says "you can't."

Today's Team: The Cleveland Cavaliers

One of my students wrote a paper about watching Lebron play high school ball. Now, when I see him with the Cav's, I know I'm kind of in love, despite the fact that I try to avoid superstars. They only break your heart. He's got power, drive, and maybe not as much finesse as Kobe, but hell, he's only just turned 25. I also like Mo Williams and mothereffing Ben Wallace, who kept playing with a Broken Leg. I know they lost to the Celtics last night, but they'll hopefully beat them in the playoffs. Sorry Dad.

Old School Green Roof

It's surely not the first green roof but this hotel is over a hundred years old. This was the eco-vacation destination of Norway before eco-vacation destinations existed. Now green roofs are a hot new trend. Well they are a hot trend, obviously they aren't new.

On a side not, I've seen weeds and saplings growing out of the gutters of old houses in NJ (and the engines of rusted out cars in their driveway). Were those people just enviromentalists ahead of their time? I always thought they were just trashy.

The Cash Cab Brings People Together

Over the course of our Cash Cab watching, we've seen fathers accept their aloof sons, fighting couples make up, and young children prove to their parents that serious cartoon knowledge can pay off.

Before one particular commercial break, the youngest of two sons answered the last big money question, "Teddy Roosevelt." He won over $800 for his family. Then, right before they all climbed out of the cab, he muttered, "Teddy's so cool."

TMT agrees, little dude. Rough Riders!

But some of our favorite CC's are when the lone traveler hops in and wins big. There's something special about two people in a car, one asking trivia and the other answering, excitedly, that titillates us.

PS It really makes us miss NYC.

The Book Cover Archive

There are many many great sites to visit for some creative stimulation. This is one of my latest. A favorite part of going to a book store, beside getting a new book, is checking out covers. That exactly what The Book Cover Archive offers. A self described archive of cover designs and designers for the purpose of appreciation and categorization.

Yes it's got some great features that make it design nerd heaven, like when you choose a cover you can learn everything from it's typeface to the art director, but it's also just plain fun. The site is simple and as far as I'm concerned well designed. I really enjoy taking in 50 books at a time, neatly organized in rows that scale to fit the size of your browser. You can search by pretty much everything, title, illustrator, art director, aurthor, etc. Plus they link right to Amazon, where you can buy the book who's cover you love but will probably never read.

Best part: You don't have to worry that all the people in the bookstore are snobishly looking down at you for picking up 'that' book. You liked the cover, or were at least drawn to it, even if it was awful once you got it in your hands, so you picked it up. It's not about the writing. It's about the design.

Go. Waste some time. Enjoy a good book cover.

Well that sounds a lot filthier than I'd intended. What I mean is that my favorite director won the Academy Award last night for best directing, best picture, and more for his film, "Slumdog Millionaire." Now, I've not seen Slumdog Millionare. That I haven't is mostly to do with the fact that my mom LOVES "Slumdog."

"Mom, what are you doing this weekend?"

"Oh, we're going to see Slumdog!"

"That'll be fun. Let me know what you think of it."

"I will love it."

"Yeah well, just let me know after you've seen it."

"Oh, I know I will love Slumdog."

"Mom, can you stop saying 'Slumdog?"

My mom had a similarly offputting enthusiasm for the book "Memoirs of a Geisha." A copy kept showing up on my bedroom dresser, hamper, etc. Needless to say, I've devoted my entire life to never reading that goddam book. But I digress.

What I have seen from Boyle: Trainspotting, The Beach (though not as wonderfully grotesque as the Garland book on which it was based, still enjoyable), Milliones (a treat), Sunshine, and my favorite movie...28 Days Later.

That's right readers, my favorite movie of all time is a well done zombie thriller.
Nothing teaches you more about the pitfalls of humanity than those who have lost it. And are hungry for flesh.

Top Chef Finale Predictions

1) When Stefan reveals that his hefty ego is just a cover for his insecurities, TMT will share one big married puke.

Remember in the Season 3 finale, when Hung's fish was cold and soulless, which was a way of saying that Hung was a robot? So in order to win Top Chef, he had to make a plug for his heart? That he cooks from it; came from a long line of loving, cooking Huynh's?

Well, TMT expects some kind of Stefan humbling. Maybe he will cry. Maybe he will reveal that he was bullied or molested as a child. (Which reminds me of my favorite Onion piece of all time.)

Sometimes really talented people are a-holes. Can't we all just embrace that?

2) Jorax will get hit upside the head with a Stefan blast.

AP has disliked Jorax from day 1. I thought it was because husband had a crush on Leah, but now I think there was room for only one bald in his heart.

Personally, I think Hosea is talented, and that he could easily win if he weren't so flustered by Stefan's big Finnish antics.

3) Carla will Carebear Stare her way to a victory.

She says she puts the love in her food and I can taste it. Lady made a nonalcoholic drink for a New Orleans challenge because she "doesn't drink" and still won. That's the kind of uncompromising, confident, innovative pea maker I'm looking for.

AP's Raspberry Sorbet Recipe

AP's Raspberry Sorbet Recipe (mostly stolen from Cookstr):

Ingredients
2 cups raspberries

¼ cup orange juice
3 cups water
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

Directions
In a saucepan, combine the raspberries, orange juice, and ½ cup of the water. Cook over medium heat, 5 to 7 minutes. Mash the raspberries, still in the saucepan, with the back of a wooden spoon.
Add the sugar, lemon juice, and remaining water. Reduce heat to low and simmer, stirring often, about 15 minutes. Let cool.
Freeze in an ice-cream maker according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Add dark chocolate chips halfway through freeze time.

YUM.

I don't watch much tennis, but I try not to miss a Nadal/Federer final. They are the most exciting sporting events I have ever seen (Sorry Giants), and from the looks of it, this year's Australian Open was no exception. (That's right I fucking missed it).

5-sets, the longest Aussie championship in history left the young bull on top again. Rafa is a motherfucking monster on the court (and that's a really serious monster). But Roger is still a masterful player, which makes your editor feel like shit to see him so plainly heartbroken after losing in Melbourne.

As the trophy was awarded to his opponent, Federer couldn't hold back tears. "Maybe I'll try later. God, it's killing me."

But moments later, he composed himself enough to offer this to Nadal: "You deserved it. You played a fantastic final."

For Rafa's part, when he collected his trophy, he embraced Federer, saying "Roger, sorry for today. I really know how you feel right now. Remember, you're a great champion, you're one of the best in history."

The most notable part of all this for me is that I've switched sides. I came into their rivalry with affection for the young, capri pant wearing underdog that Rafa was in the beginning, winning only on red clay courts. But now that he's won 3 of the Grand Slam Finals they've battled, I've turncoated.

Don't worry Roger, you've got me now. I'm here to help. And stop crying, you look like a pussy.

Today, for one reason or another, I visited a James Franco fansite.

And it got me thinking: Who are these people that run fansites? Do they have jobs? This one was really well put together, surprisingly so. Who has this kind of time?

What a blast from the past. I thought the heyday of fansites was the mid 90's, when I frequented AOL chatrooms and my "15/F/RI," was a wild overestimation. I was a sexy 12.
