Although unsuccessful, last Saturday’s near upset of the New England Patriots by your New York Giants was, in the opinion of many, the most well played contest of the NFL season. No one can dispute that the Patriots, this year’s super team, have one the top offensive units ever assembled. This was not the first time an undefeated offensive juggernaut had invaded Gotham with an undefeated record. Those long in the tooth will recall the 1958 Baltimore Colts led by that era’s greatest quarterback, the famous, Johnny Unitas. The ’58 Colts had dispatched of their first six opponents in their 12-game season by an average of 24 points. On that Sunday afternoon in late October 1958, it was the New York Football Giants led by veteran quarterback Charley Conerly on the winning side of a 24-21 score.
I contrast the 1958 Colts and the 2007 Patriots because of the one major difference. In 1958, the undefeated Colt team that lost to the Giants was without its injured superstar, Mr. Unitas. I submit that there is no greater factor in the perfect regular season enjoyed by the Patriots in 2007 than the fact that their “Johnny U” the amazing Mr. Brady, has remained healthy for 16 games.
To the chagrin of New Englanders, the odds are not in favor of Brady remaining health for another 3 weeks, especially considering the number of passing attempts he will have to make due to the absence of a legitimate running game.
So fans, you will likely read somewhere in the next month the headlines of “Brady injury too much for Pats to overcome.”
